I’ve been meaning to write more articles here at Turning Minds, but I’ve come up with plenty of reasons why not to write. Here are a few of my best excuses, er reasons why I don’t write more.
1) I have nothing to say
2) Everything I want to say has already been said
3) I’m too busy working with clients
4) I’m too busy prospecting for new clients
5) Nobody cares what I have to say
Those are my top 5. Do any sound familiar to you and your business? If so, here are 7 ways to overcome these excuses and get writing more articles for your website.
1) I talk a lot every single day. If I take time to pay attention to what I’m saying, and what my clients and prospects are saying in just 1% of the time, I’ll have something useful to share on my blog. This article is an example of a conversation I had in my head that I’ve helped my clients overcome many times.
2) Nobody reads every blog on the planet. Not even me. People want to hear my unique voice and my opinion on things. Just because someone else said it first doesn’t mean I don’t have a different opinion or at least a different way of looking at things than most other writers.
3) Yes, I am working with clients a lot more. I’m glad for that though it is not 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I have at least 12 minutes to write an article at least a few days a week.
4) Again, I do spend a lot of time prospecting for new business. It’s part of the business cycle. Again, it’s not 24x7x365. And I can start an article between meetings, in my car, on my phone and finish it later if I run out of time.
5) People do care what I have to say. Not everybody, but somebody does care. This article will be perfect for someone. I just don’t know who.
Can you relate to any of these conversations I’ve had in my head?
Digging deeper, I realize my biggest reason is just that I’ve just gotten out of practice. I need to make writing a daily part of what I do again. I need to set a reasonable goal for writing content every week and go after it.
And so should you.
Set a content goal this week for 2 articles of 300-500 words. Set a timer for 12 minutes and get writing! This article took me 11 minutes to write, which leaves me 1 minute to find a graphic to go with it. What do you think? Is this helpful and doable for you?
